West Texas A&M fans know a lot is riding on Saturday's game vs. Tarleton State.
For the Buffs, Priority 1 is winning the game and getting into the playoffs.
But there are other factors at work. If WT can beat a Texans team with eight wins, Texas A&M-Kingsville gets its seventh win by beating Angelo State, Mesa State reaches seven wins by taking out Nebraska-Kearney (6-5) and Central Oklahoma ends its season with its seventh straight win, WT's strength of schedule gets much better. Perhaps enough to lift the Buffs past Pittsburg State to No. 3 in the Super Region Four rankings.
If that happens, WT still plays at home but gets the No. 6 seed, which could be Tarleton.
If WT stays at No. 4, the Buffs probably would face No. 5 Central Washington. The winner gets Abilene Christian, a daunting task but one the Buffs would eagerly accept.
Fans enjoy pondering playoff scenarios but the bottom line is this: the Buffs have to beat Tarleton to guarantee a playoff berth. Who they'll play after that will be known soon enough.
