With apologies to Angelo State, here are this week's Lone Star Conference player of the week awards for the South Division.
* Defense: Jared Brock, West Texas A&M linebacker. On a defense that shares the load, Brock's 11 tackles, including a sack, and a blocked kick stand out.
* Special teams: Cort Johnson, WT punter. Johnson hasn't had a big year, perhaps trying too hard on his few opportunities to punt (34 times in 10 games). However, against Northeastern State, Johnson averaged almost 50 yards a punt and landed two kicks inside the NSU 10 that teammates covered. Both time WT forced RiverHawks' mistakes and scored.
ASU won those awards as announced by the Lone Star Conference, and the Rams should be applauded for playing their best game in four weeks against Tarleton State on national TV.
However, the efforts by Brock and Johnson were overlooked.
